Idaho State University alumnus Michael B. Calley has been recognized with the “Outstanding Engineer of the Year Award” by Idaho State University and the Eastern Idaho Engineering Council.

This is the 21st award given by the ISU engineering programs. Calley was honored at the Engineers Week banquet held in February, under the auspices of the Eastern Idaho Engineering Council.

Calley received his Bachelor of Science degree in engineering in 1989 from ISU. He also lettered for four years on the varsity football squad as a linebacker. He received his Master of Science degree in 1991 in nuclear science and engineering from ISU, with his thesis focusing on probabilistic risk assessment for nuclear systems.

After graduating, Calley joined the Idaho National Laboratory, where he continued to focus on probabilistic risk assessment, safety evaluations and hazard assessments.

Calley is now department manager of the Risk Assessment and Management Services Department at the INL. This is the largest group of reliability and risk management groups among all of the laboratories operated by the U.S. Department of Energy.  Customers have included the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and a number of commercial firms. He has 27 years of experience in the field of risk assessment and safety evaluations.

Calley received the 2008 Professional Achievement Award from the ISU College of Engineering, and currently serves as the president of the ISU Engineering Advisory Council. In 2002, he was inducted into the ISU Sports Hall of Fame, and is currently a member of the Bengal Athletic Boosters board of directors, as well as one of the founders of the ISU Football Alumni Team.

He is married to Kristin Calley, associate professor in the ISU Department of Dental Hygiene, and they have two daughters, 12 and 15, both active in basketball, soccer and golf.

Calley was also instrumental in establishing the Pocatello Marathon, held on Labor Day weekend, and he serves on the Pocatello Sports Committee.
