Hawthorne Wins Math Club Grand Prize

Categories:

Hawthorne Middle School of Pocatello was chosen as the Grand Prize Winner of the MATHCOUNTS ® National Math Club. The National Math Club is a math enrichment initiative providing a structure and activities to encourage the formation of math clubs within schools.

Hawthorne Middle School has a history with the MATHCOUNTS® curriculum spanning decades, but coach Michael McFadden has taken the school’s program to new heights. Under McFadden’s leadership, the school club finished fourth in the Southeast Idaho Chapter Competition in February, earned a Gold Level status with the National Math Club, and completed a Math Video Challenge. The Mathletes submitted several projects based on statistical analysis including surveys which were qualitative, quantitative and comparative. The Mathletes then developed a hypothesis, carried out a testing procedure and analyzed the data. From the analyzed data they were able to draw conclusions and create graphs.

The Grand Prize qualified four students and their coach for an all-expense paid trip to the National MATHCOUNTS Competition in Washington DC in May. Over 65 dedicated and qualified students participated in Hawthorne’s MATHCOUNTS Club this year, so when faced with choosing the four lucky ones to attend, Mr. McFadden opted to go with a random selection.

Mr. McFadden and the Hawthorne Middle School Mathletes will be recognized by the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District 25 at the next board meeting on April 19th.
